Ok here’s my week #3 submission. After listening to the interview with Tara Reed I really got a great understanding of licensing and I’m really excited about trying getting to do it.
So here it goes:
Target Market
Magazines/Publishers/Reps
Highlights
National Geographic Kids
Penguin
Barron’s
Cricket Magazine
Cartwheel Publishing
Nickelodeon (have a marketing contact not sure where I want to go with this one)
Little Tiger Press
Kid Shannon
MB artists
Marshall cavendish

Portfolio: being that I am targeting children’s publications as well as licensing opportunities I have 2 intentions, creating characters and creating environment. Both of these will intertwine in order to make the opportunity available to both industries, books and licensing.
1. Character Portfolio
School Character (bullies, nerds, friends, schoolyard play)
Bedtime Character (think monsters inc.)
Animal Character (Zoo, rainforest, nighttime animals, Africa)
2. Environment settings
Classroom and schoolyard Setting
Zoo Setting
Bedroom setting
Rainforest setting
The “wild” setting

I think for now I should really try to focus on these particular items as to not make myself crazy nuts trying to get too much done. Phew, see what a good glass of wine does to ya!

Ok here’s another one! Obviously I haven’t yet picked a style of illustrating that I’m in love with so be patient as you see my illustrations they will probably change styles drastically.  I sketched this in photoshop with my awesome wacom monitor :) I’ve been dying to try some painting and sketching with it. To be honest I want to really do more vector style illustration but this came to mind so I went with it.

Parenting: Why Art Makes Kids Smarter

I was so happy to come across this article today in Parenting Magazine,”Why Art Makes Kids Smarter“.  Although I am not a trained art teacher, I do teach art to preschool and grammar aged school children.  I have always loved art and believe that all children should be exposed to art and what art means.  I have been teaching in my daughters after school class ages 4-7 and you would be amazed at how much they can remember and learn.  They are always so eager to participate and answer questions, I normally focus on an artist each month and we design our own art pieces to mimic that type of art.  It is a shame how many schools are eliminating art.  I have been especially displeased with my 7 years olds art projects, I don’t believe asking a child to draw a halloween scene is considered art, they can do that anywhere.  Lets engage our children in the meaning of art, art doesn’t have to be perfect, its have fun and learning at the same time.
